Glendale Police Arrest 4 Burglary Suspects

Four people were arrested on suspicion of burglary, including a man who fled from a traffic stop and barricaded himself under a house for several hours, Glendale police reported Tuesday.

About 3 p.m. Monday, police tried to stop a car near Colorado Boulevard and the Glendale (2) Freeway for having no license plates, said Glendale police Sgt. Dan Suttles.

“The vehicle, which was occupied by two males and two females, failed to stop and led the police officers into Eagle Rock,” Suttles said. “The car finally came to a stop on El Verano Avenue, just north of Colorado Boulevard.”

The three passengers were quickly taken into custody, but the driver, later identified as 40-year-old Joseph Gutierrez, got out of the car and fled on foot, climbing several fences and running across the freeway, Suttles said.

“After crossing the freeway, Gutierrez continued to climb fences and run through the backyards of homes in the area,” Suttles said. “Eventually he hid under a house on the 500 Block of Lincoln Avenue in Glendale.”

Officers set up a containment, and tried to take Gutierrez into custody.

“Gutierrez refused to surrender or come out from under the house,” Suttles said. “Multiple resources were called to the area to attempt to negotiate with Gutierrez. However, after several hours all attempts to negotiate with Gutierrez failed. Eventually, tear gas was used to force Gutierrez to surrender (and) at approximately 11 p.m., Gutierrez was arrested.”

Gutierrez was booked on suspicion of burglary, as were the three passengers in the car: Grecia Carrillo, 28, Carmen Raphael, 37, and Jonathan Rendon, 31.

Gutierrez had an outstanding warrant for his arrest for an alleged burglary in Los Angeles. He is also suspected of breaking into the home where he was found hiding, Suttles said.

Burglary tools and possible stolen items were found inside the vehicle, he said.
